Jorte – Personal Organizer/Better Calendar #Android #Jorte

Posted by sherri @ 1:26 pm in Android Apps Google Misc..

The Android OS is great for it's simplicity. Some features, though, due to their "simplicity", are lacking in features, and leave much to be desired. The native calendar app is one of these features. While it syncs beautifully with the Google calendar, there is not much else it does. No tasks, no "to do" lists, no way to make certain events "important", and no way to "check off" completed items. Luckily, I was told to try this app, and it certainly does all the things the native app "misses".

A little more information:
This software is a personal organizer application. We designed the application to be as close to a real personal organizer possible, and also to be attractive and practical. Not only the scheduler but also ToDo can be used.

It corresponds to the Google calendar and the widget.

Latest version: 1.1.23 (for all Android versions)
Try it and let us know what you think!

AT&T News Room – Press Release #iPhone #iPad #Mobile

Posted by ParaCAD @ 7:20 pm in AT&T Apple Misc. News iPad iPhone.

AT&T Announces New Lower-Priced Wireless Data Plans

AT&T*, the U.S. smartphone leader, today introduced new wireless data plans that make it more affordable for more people to enjoy the benefits of the mobile Internet. Customers can pick the new data plan that best meets their needs – either a $15 per month entry plan or a $25 per month plan with 10 times more data. Current smartphone customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension.

“AT&T helps mobilize everything on the Internet – your favorite web sites, TV shows, music, games and social networks. Virtually everything previously done while sitting at a computer can now be done on the go,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “To give more people the opportunity to experience these benefits, we’re breaking free from the traditional ‘one-size-fits-all’ pricing model and making the mobile Internet more affordable to a greater number of people.”

Each plan includes unlimited access at no additional charge to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the U.S. Customers can also use unlimited Wi-Fi at home, in the office or elsewhere if available. AT&T will also help customers manage their wireless data usage by sending free text messages after customers reach different usage intervals and by providing online tools, including a smartphone app that shows monthly usage information.

The new wireless data plans – including a new tethering option – will be available beginning June 7. Current AT&T voice and texting plans are unchanged.

More Choice

The new AT&T plans provide large amounts of data to enable people to enjoy their favorite online activities:

DataPlus. Provides 200 megabytes (MB) of data – for example, enough to send/receive 1,000 emails (no attachments), plus send/receive 150 emails with attachments, plus view 400 Web pages, plus post 50 photos on social media sites, plus watch 20 minutes of streaming video – for just $15 per month.** This plan, which can save customers up to 50 percent off their wireless data charges, is designed for people who primarily like to surf the web, send email and use social networking apps. If customers exceed 200 MB in a monthly billing cycle, they will receive an additional 200 MB of data usage for $15 for use in the cycle. Currently, 65 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 200 MB of data per month on average.

DataPro. Provides 2 gigabytes (GB) of data – for example, enough to send/receive 10,000 emails (no attachments), plus send/receive 1,500 emails with attachments, plus view 4,000 Web pages, plus post 500 photos to social media sites, plus watch 200 minutes of streaming video – for $25 per month.** Should a customer exceed 2 GB during a billing cycle, they will receive an additional 1 GB of data for $10 for use in the cycle. Currently, 98 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 2 GB of data a month on average.

Tethering. Smartphone customers – including iPhone customers – who choose the DataPro plan have the option to add tethering for an additional $20 per month. Tethering lets customers use their smartphones as a modem to provide a broadband connection for laptop computers, netbooks or other computing devices. Tethering for iPhones will be available when Apple releases iPhone OS 4 this summer.

With the new wireless data plans, pricing for a smartphone voice and data bundle now starts at just $54.99 per month for an individual plan, or $24.99 per month for an additional line on a FamilyTalk plan, $15 per month less than the price of the previous entry level bundle.

For new iPad customers, the $25 per month 2 GB plan will replace the existing $29.99 unlimited plan. iPad customers will continue to pre-pay for their wireless data plan and no contract is required. Existing iPad customers who have the $29.99 per month unlimited plan can keep that plan or switch to the new $25 per month plan with 2 GB of data.

Wi-Fi at 20,000 AT&T Hot Spots

The vast majority of smartphones that AT&T offers have built-in Wi-Fi, which lets the devices automatically switch from the wireless network to a Wi-Fi hotspot without prompting, making Wi-Fi even more convenient and easy to use. This enables customers to use Wi-Fi in the home, office and at public locations where available. Wi-Fi will generally provide consistently fast speeds and does not count against a customer’s monthly data plan usage total. In addition, virtually all AT&T smartphone customers have access at no additional charge to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the U.S. Customers can get more information on how to use Wi-Fi and find the location of AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots at www.att.com/wifiaccess.

Monitoring and Managing Usage

To help customers easily check their data usage, AT&T has made the information readily available in a number of ways***:

--Customer Text Notifications On Data Usage. When customers begin to approach their monthly usage limit, AT&T will send three text notifications – after they reach 65 percent, 90 percent and 100 percent of the threshold. Customers will also be sent emails if AT&T has their email address.

--Data Usage Monitoring. Additionally, customers with iPhones and other select devices can use the free AT&T myWireless application to check data usage. The application is available for download in several smartphone app stores. Also, AT&T customers can call *DATA# from their wireless phone to check their data usage for the current billing period. They receive a free text message with their usage information. Customers can also go online to www.att.com/wireless to see all of their usage information, past and present.

--Data Calculator. The easy-to-use online data calculator enables customers to estimate their mobile data usage and get a better sense for which data plan is right for them. It’s located at www.att.com/datacalculator.
Customers can learn more about the new plans online at www.att.com/dataplans, by contacting AT&T customer service at 1-800-331-0500, or by visiting an AT&T retail store.

AT&T expects these new data plans to have minimal revenue impact this year and to not affect previous guidance for 2010.

No Google Navigation For you iPhone!

Posted by n99hockey @ 1:45 pm in Misc. News iPhone.

Just the other day it looked as though Google was going to be bringing Google Navigation (the application that made its debut on the Droid) to the iPhone platform.  Well, that was just shot down!

Boy Genius Report, reported from a MacUser (UK) article yesterday that Google Maps Navigation would be coming to the iPhone as well as other platforms, and just as quick as that report came out, another one saying sorry comes out.    Today, PC World confirmed that it will not be coming to the iPhone.

A Google spokesperson said;

We did not say we would bring it to iPhone, we said to date we've had it on Android and that in the future it may come to other platforms but did not confirm this will be coming to iPhone at all

On a more interesting note for those of us without iPhone's, the article goes on to mention a few unknowns about the Android application.

Maps Navigation pre-caches an entire route, and it needs a data connection only when it calculates the directions. So, while driving to your destination, if you lose the connection temporarily, the route progress will still be displayed as long as you stay on the initial route.

Could it be Google playing hardball or something a lot more innocent?  Either way sorry iPhone users, looks like no fun for you now, but hey, maybe in the distant future Google will change its mind!

- Scott

iPhone OS 4.0 Event…. #iPhone #SteveJobs #Apple #iPad

Posted by ParaCAD @ 12:45 am in Apple Apps Misc. News Updated iPad iPhone iPod Touch iTunes.

This was a huge deal, iPhoneOS 4.0. Come on! All of us iPhone users were very much awaiting this. Now we have so much info from the Steve Job and Company presentation that points possibly to many things we had always hoped for. Right of the bat, like a movie rule, "Ladies and gentlemen, please switch your devices to silent mode."

So we continue..........

First thing they start off with is that the iPad is shipping. That's great, but we are a little torn between the new iPad and the new iPhone OS 4.0...What do we talk about, and what will we hear!?

Well Steve goes on just for a bit about the iPad. (Fine we're interested). and he says, "The first day we sold 300,000 iPads, and I want to update you...as of today we've sold about 450,000." Awesome! Jobs also says, "I'm told Best Buy is out of stock...We can't make enough of them"

Next, iBooks. One of the first things discussed. Over 600,000 iBooks have been downloaded and the iPad is barely a week old.

Then we hear, Over 4 billion apps downloaded of the 185,000 apps in the App Store. So to add to those figures, Jobs says the following - "We have over 3500 iPad apps in the store. These apps on the iPad are just amazing. I want to show you some screenshots of some of the apps. You'll be surprised how great these are if you haven't seen them." He then proceeds to do as he promises and show a few slides of apps on the iPad.

Now, we'll move on to the iPhone! First statistic, iPhone has 64% of the mobile browser use share, all else is half. Steve keeps on with statistics..."We've sold over 50m iPhones to date, and if you add the touch, over 85m iPhones and iPod touches. If you're a dev, that's a plum market to go after"

Finally, Mr. Jobs lets us all know that Apple is releasing a developers preview of iPhone 4.0. Over 1500 API's, access to calendars, library, quicklook. Releasing a framework called Accelerate (accelerated math functions).

Now on to user functions, which the majority of iPhone fans are looking for. Am I right?? See list:

    1. Create playlists
    2. 5x digital zoom
    3. Tap to focus on video
    4. Gift apps
    5. Geotagging places in the photo app
    6. Change the homescreen wallpaper
    7. Bluetooth keyboards
    8. Spell checker

Still no word on multitasking. Waiting.............Here we go! Time for the "tentpole features"...I'll be quick with these.

7 Features

    1. Multitasking - Background audio, VoIP, Push notifications, Local notification, Task completion, Fast app switching.
    2. Folder App - Drag Drop UI, Intelligent naming, now you can have 2160 apps on iPhone
    3. Enhanced Email - Unified inbox, Multiple exchange, Threaded messages & Fast switching!
    4. iBooks Support - EBook Reader, iBookstore, Buy once read anywhere, Sync page & bookmarks
    5. Enterprise - Data protection, Mobile Device Management, Wireless app distribution, Multiple exchange accounts, Exchange server 201, SSL VPN support.
    6. Game Center - Social gaming networking, Invite friends, Matchmaking, Leaderboards, Achievements
    7. iAd – Mobile Advertising - Interactive ads, Ads within app, ads built into iPhone OS, Apple sell and host ads, 60% revenue to developers

Lasts words I heard before the Apple team went to break was: "We are releasing it for end users for iPhone and iPod touch for users this summer. For the 3GS and iPod touch 3rd gen. and for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2nd gen, they will run many things, but there are some things they won't run, like multitasking." - (Not happy about the no multitasking for 3G, personally)

See below Engadgets Q&A section of the event:

11:07AM Q: Given that multitasking will increase data usage, how do you think AT&T will handle that? A: (Jobs) I'm not sure that's a correct assumption.

11:08AM Q: But what about Pandora? A: (Jobs) I don't think you're right. It doesn't use that much data.

11:12AM Q: Will there be an ad approval process? A: (Jobs... super long pause) Um... well there's going to be some process... but these people are paying to run ads. So, I'm not sure it'll be anything other than a light touch.

11:14AM Lots of talk about iAd... which isn't quite Engadget's bread and butter.

11:22AM We just asked Steve and co. about the lack of anything that can keep track of a timeline for something like a Twitter or IM app. Scott says that the new save states for applications will be much better than the current situation. Steve also said that they stand behind push notifications and still think it's the right choice for this platform. Then we asked about widgets or glanceable information and why it hasn't been implemented on this platform or the iPad. "Apple sort of pioneered the idea of glanceable information like widgets and it seems to me you've gone to great lengths to avoid something like that in this new OS. Can you tell me a little bit about why you've decided that? With something like the iPad, it seems perfect opportunity where you have a lot of real estate." Steve: "We shipped on Saturday, and rested on Sunday." (lots of laughs) We pressed and asked if it was possible. Steve: "Anything is possible."

11:23AM Also, when Steve was asked if there were plans to add Flash or java, his response was a flat: No.

11:26AM Uh, wow. "What are you doing about distracted driving?" Really man? Really?

11:27AM How is Apple going to stop us from driving our cars into houses, trees, or people? With a strict, secretive approval process... that's how.

11:29AM Ryan Block from GDGT: What about running unsigned apps? Steve: You know, there's a porn store for Android. Anyone can download them. You can, your kids can. That's just not a place we want to go.

11:29AM Wow. Just wow.

11:32AM Steve was asked about the iPad. Steve: "When people look back... this will be a huge thing in the history of personal computational devices."

11:35AM Q: How will the App Store change with 4? Discoverability and organization is a problem. How will you improve that? A: (Steve) The App Store is not part of iPhone OS 4, it's a service, and it is programmed mostly on the server side. We can enhance it without waiting for a major release. We can constantly improve it. We have to be careful that we don't bring the service down -- as you've noticed it has a very high uptime. In terms of discoverability, we've added Genius, but I also see an infrastructure starting to evolve to help people find apps. What I see happening is that there's a lot building up outside and around the iPhone, that are starting to provide some of that recommendation.

11:35AM Scott: Game Center is going to help spread the viral information about those apps.

11:38AM Q: Are you concerned about leaving out your older customer base (with the lack of features for older devices). A: (Steve) Well, a lot of these products that are out there are the most recent products. The old devices will get the update, but they'll miss some of these features like multitasking. If that's an incentive for them to upgrade to a new device... terrific.

11:40AM Q: How do you close applications when multitasking? A: (Scott) You don't have to. The user just uses things and doesn't ever have to worry about it. (Steve) It's like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it.

11:40AM Steve: "Okay, thanks for coming. Thanks!"

11:41AM Okay, that's it for us. Time to get lunch! Thanks so much for reading along, and a big thanks to Justin Glow, Dan Chilton, and the Blogsmith team for keeping us chugging along!

So there you have it! We get a pretty decent showing of what is to come, in the Summer for the iPhone, and the Fall for the iPad. So leave us a comment of your thought.
