Today Verizon Wireless held an event in New York City today announcing the newest Android phone to hold the Droid name:  The Droid X.  Specifications of this beast include:

-          Android 2.1 + Blur(2.2 Froyo and Flash 10.1 coming later this summer)

-          4.3 inch 854x480 screen

-          1GHz TI OMAP 3630 Processor

-          512mb RAM

-          1570mAh battery

-          8GB Internal memory + 16GB card included (compatible with up to 32GB cards)

-          8-MP camera + 720p HD video capture

-          Three microphones (standard voice mic, front-faced video mic, and a noise-cancelling mic)

-          WiFi, BT, GPS

-          WiFi Hotspot support for a maximum of 5 devices

-          HDMI-out and DLNA

It is unfortunate to hear that the device will not be shipped with 2.2 (Froyo) and Flash integration, but it was stated that these updates will be coming later this summer.  Considering the ridiculous stint with the Droid's 2.1 update, it is difficult to say how long it will actually take.  As usual, the hotspot feature will have an extra $20/month fee tied to it, as well as a tether overage charge of 5 cents/MB.  The standard $29.99 data plan will be required to use the Droid X, which will be available on July 15 at $199.99 (after $100 rebate).

The phone will also include some new apps from Verizon's partners.  The Blockbuster app will allow for rent and purchase of movies.  NFL RedZone will track stats and stream Thursday night games.  Of course, the Skype app will also be included as well as a back-up app.  The famous Swype keyboard will also be baked in.  The Droid X will also ship with a desktop sync client.

Some good news - VZW is planning to offer the phone to all customers with a 2010 upgrade.  If your Verizon plan is closing soon, consider the Droid X as your new partner in crime!

First Impressions #HTC #Incredible #Android #Review

Posted by n99hockey @ 8:37 pm in Android Verizon.

Well, it has been a little more than 48 hours with my new HTC DROID Incredible and boy has it been incredible, so I thought I would give a little review of my thoughts thus far.

First impressions, wow, coming from Windows Mobile (currently known as Windows Phone, at least today) what a difference.  The speed of this device is simply amazing, the touch screen is very responsive, and one thing I was worried about was seeing the screen outside (reports of horrible viability plagued the Nexus One), but I can happily report that there was no issue seeing it outside.

I love SenseUI, I think it is simply amazing, great to look at, and easy to navigate with.  Adding widgets and programs to screens are a breeze.  It literally took me 3 minutes to get my Gmail information in and exchange information in and I had contacts, calendar, and emails blazing across the screen.  Which makes me eager to get on a golf course and fire a golf GPS program up and see how it goes!

One thing I have taken note of is the lack of 'bars', with my WM device at work I would have 3-4 bars constantly, but with this device I have between 0-2 bars.  No fret though, I still can make calls and acess the web with 0 bars.  I have not tried to update the PRL on the Incredible yet, perhaps when I do that will change.

Battery life varies, I can't say it is outstanding, but it is adequate, I suppose.  Coming from a Moto Q, that bad boy could last for days with average to moderate usage.  My first full day with it, it lasted until about 11pm before I got the low battery indicator.  Today, I rocked Foursquare quite a few times and a little surfing and its holding steady at about 75%.  So it feels hit and miss, I continue to keep an eye on it for a few more days.

All in all this is really a great device, I highly recommend this to anyone considering an Android device.  Also, be sure to head to our forums to tell us about your Incredible experiences or even if you just have a question on how something works.

-Update- Droid Incredible – Coming Soon!

Posted by n99hockey @ 9:24 am in Android Verizon.

With Droid (HTC) Incredible talk hitting an all time high with it's impending release date of April 29th, Phandroid has just reported that Best Buy, my favorite store, might be carrying the Incredible starting on April 25th!  That is 4 days before actual Verizon stores, for those with math deficiencies (I kid, I kid).  Could this really be?  I sure hope so!

Phandroid is also reporting that it looks as though the device will retail for $599.99, which would probably mean a $199.99 price on a 2-year contract.

I will be heading to my local Best Buy store after work today to check it out, and well, see if I can, dare I say, pre-order one.  Probably too early, but hey, I am impatient!  I will be sure to report back with my findings.

For those who have been living under a rock and havent really been kept up to speed on this device, lets take a look at some of the specs, shall we?

The one that stands out to me is the 8GB of internal memory, wow.  This takes the Android platform to another level, this is a whole lot more than its nearest competitors; the Droid (original) and the Nexus One, but sporting 256 MB RAM / 512 MB ROM.  Another big step is the 8MP camera, again, the Droid and Nexus One are sporting a 5MP camera which isn't horrible for a phone, remember, these are still 'phones'.

Stay tuned for sure, HTC and Verizon are about to take the Android platform the next level.

Scott

UPDATE: Verizon just sent out a Press Release stating that the DROID Incredible will be available for Pre-Order on April 19th

DROID Incredible will be available for pre-order online at www.verizonwireless.com beginning on April 19 and it will be in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores on April 29.  Pricing will be $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement.  Customers will receive the rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted.

No word on Best Buy, but I am loving the abundance of information coming out today!  I guess no Best Buy trip for me today!
