Awesome App: “Awesome Drop”

Posted by sherri @ 6:41 pm in Android Apps Droid Incredible Motorola Droid Nexus One.

Could an application get much simpler? Doubtful. From Dashwire Labs, the app Awesome Drop is just that. Have music on a computer that you want on your phone? Don't have the cable or the SD Card adapter handy? At a friends house and want one of the songs from their computer to be put on you phone? No longer a problem!

Download the application Awesome Drop to your phone. It will tell you to open "Get your PIN at Dashwire Labs.

Go to the pc, open the site, and you will be given a PIN number. Type this into the phone. On the pc, you will see a "Drag Here" box. Find the file you want on the phone. I have used it to drag documents, photos and music to my phone. Drop the file in the box, and VOILA! It will start downloading onto the phone! The PIN number changes every time you start the application. There is no registration necessary.

Could it BE any easier? (And since this is ME talking, it must be easy!) Also, it is FREE!

This app can be downloaded directly from the market, Androlib, or AppBrain. Here is a video for you all:

Review: iMoo – simple but oh so much fun! #iMoo #Panda_Cub_Productions #iPhone #iPod

Posted by rudeboy @ 10:27 pm in Reviews iPhone.

We have "reported" on iMoo before, see here. The friendly developers at Panda Cub Productions gave us a review copy, and let me tell you, it was a lot of fun to play with. My 6 year old (Max) enjoyed it even more than I did. (He gave the app 2 thumbs up!)

Besides the great cow sounds the app comes with, the “record your own sound” (requires iPhone or iPod Touch second generation) is probably the most fun. iMoo is actually so simple that it's surprising it wasn't made sooner, but the guys at Panda Cub did great job and I'm glad they created it. iMoo looks cool and works exactly like the old "cow-in-can" toy. Of course, the difference is that iMoo has 7 cow sounds built in, plus, as mentioned before, there is the ability to record your own sound and start turning your iPhone/iPod upside down for simple fun. This is a great app to show off at birthday parties, or any party for that matter. Young and old will enjoy this one for sure.

And to quote the Panda Cub guys: So get some iMoo in you and enjoy the pastures.

Price: $0.99.

Keep Tabs on Your Data Consumption w/ Consume for iPhone #Bjango #Consume #iPhone #iPod

Posted by rudeboy @ 1:36 pm in iPhone iPhone Jailbreak iPod Touch iPod Touch Jailbreak.

consume-iphone
It’s no secret that iPhone users are data whores. Whether it’s the access they have to data-connect applications, the ability they possess to stream video and audio, or how they utilize the Web browsing experience in general, iPhone owners as a group use more data than the average smartphone user.

Just the other day, AT&T’s Ralph de la Vega put some of the blame for the network’s notoriously unreliably coverage on users themselves, going so far as to say that the company is considering a usage-based pricing scheme in the future. De la Vega does bring up an interesting point, however: Most users don’t know how much bandwidth they are consuming. Fortunately, there’s an app for that. In fact, the next version of Bjango’s Consume for the iPhone will include support for AT&T Wireless customers in the U.S.

Consume is a usage monitor for the iPhone and the iPod touch that can monitor your voice, text and data consumption on your mobile phone, and, in some areas, also your home broadband provider and teleco. Consume works with 44 different providers in six countries, and the next version of the app, version 1.2, will add support for AT&T Wireless in the U.S.

Some mobile providers offer their own usage-monitoring tools — AT&T even has its own official My Wireless [iTunes link] app — but Consume is unique in letting you monitor multiple accounts at the same time.

Consume updates how it monitors data using something called Recipes. Recipes can be added directly to the app, without having to go through the review process.
att-usageIt would be great if U.S. broadband providers like Comcast and Time Warner could be integrated into Consume, because having the ability to monitor all of your different data connections is something that is sorely lacking from the ISPs themselves.

Consumes cost $1.99 in the U.S. Although it’s too soon for AT&T iPhone users to start freaking out about data caps, it never hurts to keep an eye on exactly how much data you are using.

How do you monitor your data and voice consumption for your wireless or broadband accounts?

Hootsuite for iPhone Review #iPhone #Hootsuite #Twitter

Posted by ParaCAD @ 10:37 am in Apps Reviews iPhone.

On December 10th 2009, Hootsuite for iPhone (iTunes Link) was release in the App Store. I for one was looking forward to this, since I already use Hootsuite's browser based app on my PCs.

So when I did my search this morning for Hootsuite in the App Store I didn't hesitate to download and pay the $1.99. I wondered if this was a bit "steep" at first, But then i thought..."I paid for Tweetie twice!"....

Ok, now on to my review of the new Hootsuite iPhone app-

Starting off you will log in (this will import everything from your online Hootsuite account) or you can create a new account. So I logged in. And being familiar with the web browser app, I quickly noticed it uses a similar set up. On the 'Streams' tab you can add additional columns. Personally I would want my iPhone app layout to mirror what I use in the browser app. Which is how it initially sets up if you have a Hootsuite account prior to installing the iPhone app. Also as you'll see in the screenshots below, at any page you can send a new tweet. And something I just have to mention that I fell in love with in Tweetie. This is the manual refresh. When in your 'Home Feed' or any page stream, just slide your finger down the screen and "release to refresh".

Next under the 'Stats' tab what is listed it seems is the RSS feed I have set for our blog at TotalSmartphone.NET. Via the browser app is where I set this up (I didn't see a way to add more RSS feeds via the app, unfortunately). Here you are able to click one of the tweets and view more statistics on this specific tweet. Which is great if you want to keep better track on what people are interested in, and if you're tweets are getting hits. There's even a nice little graph to help you get a better visual.

Then there's the always useful and popular 'Search' tab, where ofcourse you can see the trending topics, your recent searches and hey look! Of course "Tiger Woods" is trending! :)
Finally the 'Settings' tab. Here you'll find your log-in for Hootsuite which is separate from your Twitter account. Some may not like the fact of having to actually sign up for a Hootsuite account, but I don't mind it at all. Me, I only have one twitter account. But if you do have multiple accounts, you can set these up as well through the iPhone app.

After a days worth of tweet with this new Hootsuite iPhone app, I can say I like it a lot. It does everything that I would expect from it. Especially after being a regular Hootsuite user on the PC, prior to the app. I'm glad I spent the $1.99. This price btw is only as an introductory price. So plan on the price going up in the very near future. If your on the fence about it, this may be you best chance to get it right now at the low price. I wouldn't be surprised if the price when up higher than Tweetie. If you do have this app now, let us know what you think of it in our comments!

Crash Reporter – Know who to ‘Blame’ #Crash #Reporter #iPhone #Jailbreak

Posted by rudeboy @ 9:47 pm in iPhone iPhone Jailbreak.

cr-logo
Overview

Crash Reporter is an application to ease submission of crash reports for both user and developer. It features:

  • Symbolication.
  • Accurately finding which application/extension causes the crash.
  • Developer-controlled diagnosis information (See CrashReporter_blame_script_spec).

Usage

Whenever you suspect a crash, you can launch Crash Reporter: It will show you a list with recently crashed applications. You can tap on a cell to reveal all crash logs of that application. The crash logs are sorted by date. Tap on one of them to analyze the crash log.

(Additionally, you can delete processed crash logs in this view.)

This brings you to the suspects view. In here, you can view the 'symbolicated' crash log, and the syslog in the minute that the crash happened. Crash Reporter would analyze the crash log and identify the possible libraries that causes the crash. They are divided into 3 types:

  • Primary suspect is the first library in the stack trace of the crashing thread.
  • Secondary suspects are libraries involved in the crashing thread.
  • Tertiary suspects are those involved in the application at that time, but were not running in the crashing thread.

Knowing who to blame, you can now generate a report to its developer. By default, the first link will send you to AppStore or Cydia, where you can paste to the report/mail to the developer. At the time you tap on the link, the attachments (crash log and syslog) will be uploaded to pastie.org so that the developer can retrieve it later.

Price: FREE.

Crash Reporter can be found on the repo of BigBoss, more information here.

App-Rejections.com – rejected apps developers “hang-out” #AppRejections #Apple #rejected #applications

Posted by rudeboy @ 8:28 am in Misc. iPhone.

iphone-app-iconAbout: I’ve been an iPhone developer since late 2008.

There are now > 100,000 iPhone applications available on the App Store. However, Apple has a secret, undocumented, unquestionable, random process for deciding which applications to “allow” onto the deck.

Ever since I started, people have cried “FOUL!” when they’ve been rejected by Apple for reasons that – in the developer’s mind – were unfair.

However, in most cases, the rejections were perfectly reasonable, and/or Apple had officially warned developers “don’t do this; we won’t allow it”.

In late 2009, things changed (I’ll write more about this later). Google cried “FOUL!” and triggered an FCC investigation of Apple and AT&T’s business practices over a rejected app. The invisible submission process changed radically shortly after – and in particular the number of truly “unfair” rejections soared.

It’s now gone from “easy” to “tricky” to avoid having your App rejected by Apple.

Since Apple point-blank refuses to document the criteria – or even to discuss the matter on anything except a case-by-case basis – I decided to collate all the known examples of rejected Apps. And so this site was born…

Read it for fun. Read it to find out the cutting edges of iPhone dev that other developers are riding along. Read it to find out what you can (and can’t!) get away with. Show it to clients who ask too much, as evidence that you’re not being difficult – their app really will get rejected if you add the features they’re demanding!
